What about public reviews?
When I moved back to Baltimore and established my dog training business here, I intentionally skipped setting up Google Reviews or a location on their map. Here’s why:
The most abusive trainers I’ve personally known (and witnessed) have hundreds of 5-star reviews and a 5-star rating overall. Almost no one (sometimes absolutely no one) has left a bad review for those trainers. I suspect this is because these trainers are also intimidating and manipulative with their human clients (again, I’ve witnessed this).
The day I discovered those 5-star reviews was the day I quit encouraging public reviews. If I can’t find the most important information in public reviews—the bad experiences that you most want to avoid—why in the world would I continue to trust them?
I’d rather my clients find me through my Instagram content or referral because choosing a trainer who can help your dog change their behavior is about so much more than reviews. It’s about finding a trainer who matches your values and priorities, and someone you enjoy working together with.
Ideally, my potential clients will browse my content and website and think: “THIS! This is the kind of training/trainer I’m looking for!” You’ll get the best results if you choose a trainer you align with. I hope that’s me, but if not, I hope you keep searching. <3
